Pier Paolo Pasolini was an Italian writer and filmmaker. In interview footage, Pasolini is seen explaining his filmmaking philosophy. While Pasolini's words are read in voice over, the Italian settings of Pasolini's films are shown. In clips from his films, viewers can experience examples of Pasolini's filmmaking art. Commentators illuminate the connection between Pasolini's life and his art.

The story is by the dramatist Carlo Gozzi and dates from 1762, telling of the Chinese princess Turandot, who sets her suitors three riddles in order to marry her. Only the suitor who solves the riddle may ask for her hand in marriage, otherwise death awaits.
